Introduction To Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Getting Started

Even if you are new to web development you have probably heard about search engine optimization -SEO for short. Usually, SEO is more important to professional sites than it is to personal sites but it's simply awesome to see your web site appear in the top 10 results of a search regardless of what type of website create. In this post we will discover the primary ideas of how Search Engine Optimization performs.



What is Search Engine Optimization?

Simply put, SEO is the practice or planning your website's content and HTML to improve each page's organic rank (organic rank means basically any overdue result). To that end there are many different factors that go into planning content and HTML to be more search engine friendly. The most common factors that you should consider when optimizing are the content of that site, site's page title, the meta description and meta keywords. Obviously there are more than just 4 factors to successful search engine optimization but these elements form the basic core.

How Does Search Engines Work?

Basically there are two different types of search engines, crawler- based and human-based. And yes, it's just like a vehicle transmission--automatic and manual. The crawler-based search engines use automated systems that regularly "crawl" the web and collect everything they find. The human-based engines are exactly the opposite. They require an individual / human to read, review and rank websites then enter into that information into a data base.


There is also one other "mutant" form of search engine that is usually known as a hybrid engine. Hybrid engines use crawlers to automatically compile the primary information from sites but then use the human input to influence rankings. For example, two different web sites that are almost virtually identical in content may end up with very different ranking results if one website has been positively analyzed by someone and the other has either not been analyzed or received a bad review.

Now that you know how search engines gather their information I'm sure you would like to know exactly how they determine their ranks. Well, that is the big money query. All search engines have either designed their own exclusive methods or use a different variation platform of a base search engine to compile ranks which means not two search engines are exactly the same. In fact, those algorithms are such closely protected tricks that we will likely never know exactly how information is collected and structured by any of the major search engines.

What's Essential For Search Engines?

As I mentioned previously there are many different factors that search engines weigh when compiling rankings. However, there is a set of primary elements:

Web Page Title:

Page title is one of the most critical factors of SEO as it provides the search engines with the most appropriate keywords for the web page. There are several excellent methods and bad methods when coming up with page titles. Do make your titles appropriate and use as many of your most essential keywords as possible. Don't be extremely repetitive or long winded. Being too much repetitive can be regarded as "cheat" by search engines and result in a lower rank. Being too long winded in your title can also yield the same result or the search engines may simply concatenate your title and ignore everything after a certain number of characters.

An excellent title should look something like this:

A bad headline would look something like this:

Web Page Content

This one is a little bit difficult to optimize. Your concentrate should be on two methodgies. First, try to put as many of your main keywords and words at the top of your content as possible. Obviously you should not just list keywords and words at the top of your content. It still has to appear sensible to your viewers.
Second, repeat as many keywords or key phrases throughout the text as seems sensible. Again, repetition for the sake of repetition is never a wise decision.

There are other methods that you can use to get the search engine's attention on keywords such as the use of <H1> tags but we don't have space to go into those methods in this post. However, I promise we will cover some of those techniques in a future post.

Meta Description

This is merely a brief conclusion of the content that is on your page. In most situations 2 to 3 phrases will be sufficient. When you write your description try to use as many of you main keywords as makes sense. Again, don't go insane on the repeating or you may just end up lowering your rank instead of increasing it. An example of an excellent description would be:

Meta Keywords

This is precisely what you would expect, a list of keywords and keyword phrases. There are just a few simple things to keep in mind when placing keywords and key phrases together:


  • Implement both (keywords and your long term key phrases
  • Prioritize keywords and words from most important to least important (in case a search engine caps the number of keywords it will catalog)
  • DO NOT repeat keywords and words in the list unless they appear single or within a phrase - e.g. "search, search engine" is fine but "search, engine, engine, search engine, search engine" is not.
  • Separate keywords and phrases with a comma
  • Don't worry about placing common misspelling in your keyword and key phrase list. Most search engines will assist the chronic bad speller search with correct punctuation.



An example of a good keyword tag and key phrase tag would be something like:

What is Meta Data Exactly?

Meta data or meta description fairly involves all meta tags such as description and keywords described above. Of course, there are many more that you can use such as writer and trademark as well as http-equiv configurations which determine factors like your content type and language configurations. Meta tags were actually developed with complete versatility in thoughts so that you could create your own meta information if you are so prepared. Keep in mind though, your customized meta data will be fairly much ignored by everything and everyone but you.

Summarizing & Putting All Together

Now that you know about all the primary pieces how do you go about placing them all together for each of your web pages? There are many different ways of thinking on this but I want to use my own checklist:

  • Read the content and gather a record of keywords
  • Prioritize the keyword and key phrase record from most essential to least important
  • Write the title by using as many main keywords as possible
  • Write the description by using as many main keywords as possible
  • Review the content and see if there is any need to be any re-write to bring main keywords more to the front
  • Put it all together on your website/ blog or webpage



When you are all done the top of your web page should look something like this:
